The judging

Product Awards
Products are tested and tasted in professional kitchens by a large panel of experienced judges, including nutritionists, food technologists, butchers, fishmongers and development chefs.
Products are judged on customer appeal, visual appearance, nutrition, cooking, serving and storage details, comparison of raw and cooked appearance (where appropriate), smell, taste, texture and value for money. You have to enter these awards to be in with a chance of winning Retailer of the Year.

Retail Counter Awards
For the first stage, all entries into the special Counter Awards will be uniformly assessed and scored from the easy on-line written application against a set of criteria. The criteria will include performance against targets and how the team develop their craft skills.  From this, a list of  finalists will be drawn up – one list to find The UK’s Best Fish Counter Team and one list for The UK’s Best Butchery Counter Team. Each team will be visited at their place of work by our on-the-road judge who will assess  display excellence,  product knowledge and witness the teamwork and customer service in action.  The two scores will be added  to find the winners.  Representatives from every finalist counter visited will be encouraged to attend the Awards lunch on the 8th September to find out if they are the winners.

Processing and Supply Chain Awards
All entries will be assessed carefully by a panel of specially selected expert judges. The judges will review the written entry and score against a set of criteria to include customer service, innovation, communication and strategy.  From this a shortlist will be agreed and announced in June. The winners will be revealed at the Awards lunch on the 8th September.
